Twilight Movies & Books, Are They For Christians??

This is something that has been on my heart for quite some time, so it is time for me to write my feelings about it.

I take the chance here that there will be those that dislike me and/or will disagree with me. That is fine, it is your perogative. However, if you are a born again Christian, can you really be upset that I have stated that in my opinion that the movie and books called Twilight are not something a Christian should see? I hope not. I see how many teenagers and grown women are obsessed with this movie. They devour the books with more fervor than they do the Holy Bible. They talk about the Twilight series more than they talk about other things, (can you say obsessed?), they shout out with glee that the newest movie is coming out soon!

There is nothing wrong with being excited about something, however, it depends on what that "something" is. Does this "something" glorify God? Does this "something" make you proud before God? I hope that anyone who reads this takes it the way I mean it to come across. God has put this on my heart to warn others about this movie and these books. So, I hope you take this in the spirit it is meant. I love each of my Christian brothers and sisters and I worry that they are being deceived by Satan.

Remember this from the Bible: 2 TIMOTHY 3:1-7 1But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— 5having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them.

6They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over weak-willed women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, 7always learning but never able to acknowledge the truth.

So much of the above Bible verses remind me of this situation.

Now let me say, that I have been saved for only about a year now. I am far from an expert in all things Christian and I am certainly not a Bible Scholar. However, having said that, I AM unfortunately very knowledgeable about SIN and witchcraft, vampires, and demons. I used to enjoy reading books about these subjects.

BEFORE I became saved, I would have jumped all over these Twilight books and movies. But now, the Lord has convicted me that these are not something that I should watch.
PSALM 101:3 I will set before my eyes no vile thing. The deeds of faithless men I hate; they will not cling to me.

WHAT WOULD JESUS DO? WOULD HE WATCH THIS MOVIE WITH YOU? PLEASE THINK ABOUT THAT...

For parents, what you want to know BEFORE you allow your children to read the Twilight books or watch the movies:

  • Forced to move to a new school mid-year is unsettling for Bella, although her new classmates warmly welcome her.
  • Another group of students, however, remain on the fringes of the group.
  • Two youth are sent to the hospital after a near fatal car accident.
  • A group of beer-toting male teens surround a lone girl on a dark street and threaten her.
  • A vampire bites the necks of his victims.
  • Two men are chased, attacked and killed by vampires (deaths occur off-screen).
  • The covered corpse of one victim is seen.
  • A girl is injured by a glass shard in her leg and nearly killed during a brutal fight between two vampires.
  • Bloody injuries are portrayed.
  • Characters are thrown into mirrors, across a room and through windows during the brawl.
  • One character is beheaded, dismembered and burned (without graphic detail).
  • Illustrated depictions of death are seen in a book.
  • Teens host a casino and gamble during a school dance.
  • Characters are shown drinking or with beer cans on several occasions, including while cleaning a rifle.
  • Girls make sexually-oriented comments about male anatomy.
  • Other brief sexual innuendos are contained in the script.
  • A girl wears a low cut dress with the intention of revealing her chest.
  • Teens kiss passionately in a bedroom.
  • Infrequent terms of Christian Deity are used.
  • Lying to parents and disobeying parents.
  • A couple of bad words.
These are some reviews I found online for this movie. For the purposes of this article, we will include mostly the negative ones as these are from the Christian perspective.

TWILIGHT MOVIE REVIEWS (from a Christian perspective):

Positive - The offensive content in the film is surprisingly and refreshingly mild. I did not hear any curse words, and the Lord’s name was only profaned about two times. If viewers are offended by the thought of seeing vampires in a film, then do not see it. Seeing the folklore on the big screen does not offend me because it is not glorified since Edward often called himself a monster.

Negative - The film transitions well, as movies go. I rated it “extremely offensive,” as a Christian, because based on biblical standards we are not to drink blood or approve of others that do. Some will argue and say it is fantasy, so why should it matter. I say that there are people who want to be vampire-like and this gives them the okay. It comes under the guise of no blatant profanity, and nudity that alot of parents watch for in teenage movies.

I saw this movie and read all 4 books and saw a definite obsessive change in my daughter and her friends. I am sorry that I didn't recognize this wolf in sheep's clothing.

I take offense to the above writer who said they heard the name of the Lord profane Only twice. Once should have been enough to walk out of the theater. The sad thing I do not remember hearing the profanity.

I am sure if you read the Potter books and did not have a problem with those books, these are the books for you.
My Ratings: Moral rating: Extremely Offensive / Moviemaking quality: 4

Negative - I could not tolerate watching it completely. It makes me wonder about the parables of the wicked servants... How much evil can one tolerate and still go to heaven?? Is not this the generation that calls evil good? How can ANY vampire be good? (a white witch is still a witch) How much willing evil in you will God tolerate? NONE. Rat poison is still poison even though it is 99.9% good food, and so is this movie.
My Ratings: Moral rating: Extremely Offensive / Moviemaking quality: 2

Negative - Mat 7:13 “Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat”: Just the basics here, just what is the movie about? Vampires, what are vampires? A supernatural being that kills a human by sucking blood out of its victim. What is a good vampire? Lets look at demons, are there any good ones? Mat 12:30 He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad. I mean kids are watching this, unsaved kids who don't even know the truth and have not been set free. Most of the reviews on here are positive and some even say that they only use God's name in vain twice. ONLY?… Now with that said as far as man standards yes this film is mild compared to some of the teen movies now days. Pro 14:12 There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death. However I think one should look to the Word and let it be the judge. My saying is “would Jesus sit down and watch this with me?” I don't think this one he would. Love in Christ Wes.

Negative - I first heard of this movie from several teens who attend my church, at first I heard that it was a book that was made into a movie about vampires. The next I hear they had went and seen the movie, and even a parent told me how clean it was. I decided to view this movie for myself, not understanding how a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ could justify Vampirism. After viewing the movie, I was left with a feeling of depression, which, of course, was the spirit that the young vampire in the movie carried throughout.

I immediately had to have a talk with our youth concerning this great deception of satan. Parents, I plead with you, I have no idea how the Christian review on this movie could be justified, It is strictly occult and demonic in nature. I have heard that they are good vampires, I have also heard the same in witchcraft like Harry Potter.

Saints, its time to draw a line in the sand and declare that which is unclean and unholy as the abomination the Lord declares it. We are losing a generation to the occult, and we sit passively by and allow it to happen. Even worse, we justify it as harmless and innocent.

Again, what we allow our teenagers to view, we allow them, and open them up, too. What you behold is what you will ultimately become. A strange fascination is sweeping our youth with these immoral fabrications such as witchcraft, vampirism and other paranormal views. This is a big issue in the eyes of the Lord. If a any man has the desire to drink the blood of any, this man needs to be free by the blood of One, the Lord Jesus Christ.

I would also like to view that the young Vampire in this movie withstood temptation, not to have sex with the young girl, but rather refrained from killing her and eating her blood. The girl, on the other hand, desired nothing more than to fall into the evil of the life that he lived. We as the Church must not compromise in these areas, the movie was dark, demonic and absolutely deceitful, our young people are at stake, we must be careful how we rate such a movie.

Negative - I saw this movie naively, and whilst I enjoyed the storyline, I didn't feel good after watching it. I realized that it didn't sit right with me that evil (Vampires) are portrayed as good in this movie. We wouldn't support the notion of vampires in general, so why see a movie about them, especially one that makes them out to be good? This is just deception—the enemy's number one tool! I believe we need to be more careful about what we open ourselves up to, and should seek the Lord before we view something like this. I certainly will next time.
My Ratings: Moral rating: Very Offensive / Moviemaking quality: 4

Negative - After reading the reviews and the comments I felt I must leave one of my own. In God's word, after giving Moses the commandments, He tells the children of Israel in Deut. 12:28-32: “When the LORD your God cuts off from before you the nations which you go to dispossess, and you displace them and dwell in their land, take heed to yourself that you are not ensnared to follow them, after they are destroyed from before you, and that you do not inquire after their gods, saying, ‘How did these nations serve their gods? I also will do likewise.’ You shall not worship the LORD your God in that way; for every abomination to the LORD which He hates they have done to their gods; for they burn even their sons and daughters in the fire to their gods. Whatever I command you, be careful to observe it; you shall not add to it nor take away from it.

To some people in our world Vampirism is a religion. Why do we open ourselves and our children, who can't defend themselves properly, up to false religions? Especially in the form of entertainment. God commands us not to. Why? So we don't get ensnared and turn away from our Savior. Read some of the kids comments. It's disturbing (to me anyway)!

What do vampires eat? BLOOD What does God's word say about that?

Deut. 12:23—Only be sure that you do not eat the blood, for the blood is the life: you may not eat the life with the meat.

If we are going be Christians shouldn't we walk as Jesus walked? Jesus obeyed the Father in All things. This is just watered down enough so we don't see the subtle hooks of the evil one. I for one will obey the Lord my God, and will not be watching this film nor letting my children watch it! I don't even want to perk my kids interest in vampires.
My Ratings: Moral rating: Extremely Offensive / Moviemaking quality: 1

DEFINITION OF VAMPIRE: a corpse that rises at night to drink the blood of the living.

Now, does it matter whether this corpse (vampire) is drinking the blood of humans or animals? Of course not, it is still a CORPSE who rises at night to drink the blood of a LIVING creature!

One of the most famous essays from The Satanic Bible, it is here that Anton LaVey coins the term "psychic vampire". LaVey defines a psychic vampire as one who attempts to psychologically manipulate others by systematically playing the victim; for example, a person who constantly uses some minor physical flaw as an excuse for their shortcomings and a means of gaining sympathy and favor from others. LaVey believes that people who use a victim status as a means to induce guilt in others are fundamentally weak, and therefore to be shunned by Satanists. (LaVey does not imply that anyone with a flaw is automatically weak, but rather that the use of that flaw to gain sympathy and favor is weak.)

This about this, doesn't Bella seem like a victim? I believe so.

Let me close by saying this. I am NOT saying that if you love the Twilight books and movies that you are not a Christian or that you are an awful person. What I AM saying is that I think you should really pray and ask God what He thinks. I don't think that He wants us to watch and become obsessed with vampire characters.

Vampires are of the DARK, not the LIGHT. Vampires are a religion to some, (A FALSE RELIGION). Vampires are associated with Satan and the occult. Does this sound like something that you should watch? Only you can make this decision and it is not up to me to judge you, Jesus is the one who will judge all of us.

I just think that the Twilight books and movies are something easily avoided. You don't HAVE to watch or read them. I would avoid it at all costs.

Just my two cents!

To God be the Glory.

  1. While I respect your view. You must remember that sin is sin. Lying and deception are sins, too. So if you want to boycott Twilight, then you might as well boycott almost every movie. The sin is, is that girls become obsessed with it. The movie has no witchcraft, etc. I recently read your Transformer comment and you said that you liked the 1st one. I felt that the 1st Transformer movie was WAY more offensive than Twilight! The women were so disgusting.

  2. I understand your opinion but i have to say that sin is sin. Though I dont like the vampire theme I do love the characters and the love story. I believe that everything depends on how u see or percieve something to be. I tend to see the characters through the eyes of the human condition. We are all born into sin, the Cullens didnt chose to be vampires. As christians we can overcome our nature because of the work of the cross. They resist their nature because of what they believe. Call me crazy but I believe this is what the Grace of God is all about. By the way, lets not forget that Jesus loved the world and gave himself up for every sinner. God gives everyone the chance to repent even till the very end. Thanks very much.
